Studies and Reports on Metis Health in Manitoba

The MMF and MEDO have been challenged to find health solutions for Metis and are actively delivering solutions with the opening of MEDO Care Pharmacy.

MEDO Care Pharmacy and its health service programs are clearly focused on improving the health and wellness of the Metis people of Manitoba based on the troubling findings surrounding Metis health in the study, "Profile of Metis Health Status and Health Care Utilization in Manitoba: A Population-Based Study" conducted by researchers at the University of Manitoba.

Released in 2010, the MMF and U of M's Manitoba Centre for Health Policy worked on the study's report, and it's findings clearly state that Metis adults are more likely to develop a chronic disease than people of other races in Manitoba.

Among the findings are that Metis teens have higher rates of pregnancy and are far more likely to smoke than others in the same age group, and that the Metis rate of diabetes is nearly 40% higher than in other Manitobans. Manitoba Metis residents are 21% more likely than others in the province to die before the age of 75.

Diabetes and Related Health Care Utilization in the Manitoba Metis Population (2011)
This report is the result of concerns voiced by Metis for more detail on diabetes than was available in the first Metis population health report in Canada, the Profile of Metis Health Status and Healthcare Utilization in Manitoba where a higher rate of diabetes in Metis compared to all Other Manitobans (11.8% vs. 8.8%) was seen. In the current study age- and sex- specific rates of diabetes and some co-occurring diseases are presented.
